Learned helplessness is the expectation that what happens to you is independent of what you do — and the passivity that follows from holding it. The term was named by Martin Seligman and Steven Maier after a 1967 experiment with dogs. In 2016 the same two researchers published a paper saying their original explanation of it had been backwards.

What is learned helplessness?
Learned helplessness is what happens when an animal or a person learns that their responses and their outcomes are unrelated, and then stops responding — including in later situations where responding would work. The critical word is learned: the passivity is not a reaction to the unpleasant event itself, but to the discovery that the event does not track behaviour.
That distinction is the entire experimental design. If shock alone produced passivity, every shocked animal would be passive. Only the animals that could not control the shock were.
Where the term comes from: Seligman and Maier, 1967
The term starts with Seligman and Maier’s 1967 paper in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. Twenty-four mongrel dogs were split into three groups, and what separated the groups was not how much shock they received but whether anything they did could stop it.
The three groups
- Escape — restrained in a hammock, these dogs could switch the shock off by pressing a panel with their nose.
- Yoked control — the same shocks, delivered for the same duration, but the panel did nothing. Shock length was set by the mean duration the Escape group had produced on the corresponding trial.
- Normal control — no shock at all before the test.
The yoking is the reason the study works. Both shocked groups got the same physical experience. Only one of them could do anything about it, so anything that differed afterwards had to come from controllability rather than from pain, fear or fatigue.
What happened in the shuttle box
All three groups were then tested in a two-compartment shuttle box, where stepping over a low barrier ended the shock. The Escape and Normal Control dogs learned this quickly. The yoked dogs largely did not: many took the shock without trying the barrier, and some never tried it at all. Seligman and Maier concluded that they had learned in the hammock that shock termination was independent of responding, and had carried that expectation into a situation where it was no longer true.
Eight years later Hiroto and Seligman showed the same pattern in people, using inescapable noise and unsolvable problems rather than shock. That is the study that moved the term out of animal learning and into human psychology, which is where most readers meet it.
The 2016 correction most articles miss
In 2016, Maier and Seligman published “Learned helplessness at fifty: Insights from neuroscience” in Psychological Review, and said plainly that the original theory “got it backwards”. Fifty years of work on the underlying brain circuitry had produced an explanation that inverts the one in the textbooks.
Passivity was never learned
Passivity in response to shock is not learned. It is the default, unlearned response to prolonged aversive events.
On this account, the yoked dogs did not acquire helplessness. They stayed in the state a mammal defaults to when bad things go on and cannot be predicted — a state mediated by serotonergic activity in the dorsal raphe nucleus, which suppresses escape behaviour.
What is learned is control
What the Escape dogs learned was that the aversive event was controllable. Detecting control engages circuitry in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which then inhibits the dorsal raphe nucleus and lifts the default passivity. In the authors’ own words, there is nothing in the brain that switches on when control is absent — only something that switches things off when control is present.
Two caveats they state themselves, and which any honest summary has to carry. The neuroscience was done in rats, not the original dogs. And they are explicit that control may be detected elsewhere and merely reported to the prefrontal cortex, rather than detected there. The paper closes by suggesting the circuit might be better named the hope circuit.
What learned helplessness looks like outside a laboratory
Outside the laboratory the term describes a pattern, not a condition: someone stops trying in a situation where trying would now work, because effort and outcome came apart earlier. Researchers have applied it in three settings often enough that the examples are worth knowing.
In studying
A student who has failed several exams despite revising may stop revising — not out of laziness but because the evidence available to them says preparation and marks are unrelated. The prediction the theory makes is specific: it is repeated uncontrollable failure that produces this, not failure as such.
At work
The workplace version is the employee who stops raising problems after enough of them go nowhere. This is the point where learned helplessness and burnout research overlap, and where the two terms most often get swapped for one another.
In relationships
The term also appears in research on people in circumstances they genuinely cannot influence. Two things are worth saying about that. Recognising a pattern in yourself is not a diagnosis. And a situation where someone truly has no control is a real absence of control, not a mistaken belief about one — which is a difference the theory itself insists on.
Learned helplessness, depression and burnout are not the same word
Learned helplessness is not a diagnosis and appears in no diagnostic manual. What it does have is a documented relationship to depression: Abramson, Seligman and Teasdale’s 1978 reformulation proposed it as a model of one kind of depression, not as another name for the disorder.
Burnout is a third thing again, and a differently classified one — the WHO treats it as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, which is worth reading in full if you have been told you are burnt out. Learned helplessness explains a mechanism; burnout names a syndrome tied to the workplace; depression is a clinical diagnosis. Three different kinds of word.

The 1978 reformulation is what added the three attributional dimensions. Explaining a failure as internal, stable and global (“I am bad at this, I always will be, and it applies to everything”) predicts the broadest and longest-lasting helplessness; external, unstable and specific explanations predict the narrowest. Learned helplessness and locus of control are both in the dictionary, and holding four near-synonyms apart is exactly the job a deliberate approach to memorising terminology is for. Attributional style also has a neighbour in a second vocabulary: among the cognitive biases, the fundamental attribution error names something almost everybody does, rather than a habit that varies from person to person.
