To memorise psychology terms so they last, test yourself on them instead of rereading them, and spread those tests over days rather than stacking them into one session. Those two methods — practice testing and distributed practice — are the only two of ten that a 2013 review rated high utility. Rereading and highlighting, the two methods students use most, were rated low.

Why psychology terminology is unusually hard to hold
Psychology vocabulary is harder to retain than most technical vocabulary for three specific reasons, and knowing which one is defeating you changes what you should do about it. It is rarely that the definitions are difficult. It is that they interfere with each other.
Near-synonyms that are not synonyms
Psychology is full of terms that sit a hair apart. Learned helplessness, locus of control, explanatory style and self-efficacy are four separate constructs with four separate founding papers, and every one of them is about the relationship between what you do and what happens. Learning them one at a time, days apart, is how you end up able to define each and unable to tell them apart. They have to be learned against each other.
The same trap catches the job titles. Psychologist, psychotherapist and psychiatrist are not three words for one profession, and the differences between them are legal rather than stylistic.
Three more clusters behave the same way. The twelve defence mechanisms arrive as four near-identical pairs, ten cognitive biases all sound alike until you have the distinction between a heuristic and a bias, and the four attachment styles carry one set of names across three separate measurement traditions.
Everyday words with technical meanings
The second problem is words you already know. Affect, drive, reinforcement, negative, significant and burnout all mean something narrower in psychology than in ordinary speech, and the everyday meaning is already installed. You are not learning a new word; you are overwriting one, which is harder and fails more quietly. Cognitive dissonance is the hardest of these, because it appears often enough in journalism that most readers arrive with a meaning already fitted — and it is the wrong one.
Two languages at once
If you are studying in a language that is not the language of your reading list — an international student in a German programme, or a German student working through English papers — you are learning each term twice. And the two versions do not always line up: a surprising number of English and German psychology terms look like translations of each other and are not. The sharpest case is the names of the therapies, which in Germany are not only schools of thought but the categories statutory insurance pays by.
The two methods with the strongest evidence
In 2013, John Dunlosky and four colleagues reviewed ten common study techniques and rated each one for how well its benefits generalise across learners, materials and test types. Their monograph in Psychological Science in the Public Interest gave a high utility rating to exactly two of them: practice testing and distributed practice.
Practice testing — the testing effect
Practice testing means retrieving the answer from memory rather than looking at it. Covering the definition and saying it out loud is practice testing; reading the definition again is not. The distinction sounds trivial and the effect is not.
Roediger and Karpicke demonstrated the shape of it in 2006. Students read prose passages and then either restudied them or took recall tests on them, and were tested again after five minutes, two days or a week. At five minutes, restudying won: 81% recall against 75%. After a week the order reversed and the gap widened — the tested group recalled 56%, the restudy group 42%. The restudy group were also the more confident of the two.
That confidence inversion is the practical problem. Rereading feels like learning, because the material is fluent while you are looking at it. Retrieval feels like failing, because you keep not remembering things. The feeling is inverted relative to the result.
Distributed practice — spacing
Distributed practice means spreading the same total study time across separate sessions instead of one. Cepeda and colleagues synthesised 839 assessments of it from 317 experiments in 2006 and found that the gap between sessions and the delay before the test work together: the gap that produces the best retention gets longer as the test moves further away.
A 2008 follow-up taught more than 1,350 people a set of facts and put the review anywhere up to three and a half months later and the final test up to a year after that. Measured as a proportion of the delay before the test, the best gap fell from roughly 20–40% for a one-week horizon to roughly 5–10% for a one-year horizon. For an exam a month away, that puts the useful gap at a few days — not the same evening, and not once a month.
The two most popular methods, and why they under-perform
Rereading and highlighting were both rated low utility in the 2013 review, alongside summarisation, the keyword mnemonic and imagery use for text learning. The review's own conclusion is that most students report using rereading and highlighting, that neither consistently improves performance, and that something else should be used in their place.
The mismatch is measurable. When Karpicke, Butler and Roediger asked 177 undergraduates to list what they actually do, 84% named rereading and 55% named it their single most-used strategy. Eleven per cent said they practise retrieval. The authors call the underlying problem an illusion of competence: fluent material feels like known material.
Highlighting has a second failure mode specific to terminology. A highlighted definition is a definition you have marked as important, not one you have retrieved. At the end of a chapter you have a coloured page and no evidence about which terms you can produce from memory.
Three techniques landed in the middle — elaborative interrogation, self-explanation and interleaved practice. The review rated them moderate rather than high because the evidence is thinner, not because they failed. Interleaving in particular is worth knowing about for terminology: mixing terms from different chapters into one session is closer to how an exam will ask for them than working through one chapter at a time.
A four-week plan for one exam
Here is one way to apply both findings to a defined list of terms. The structure is derived from the research; the exact numbers are a workable starting point rather than a result, and nothing about four weeks is magic.
- 1.Week one — build the list, and only the list. Go through the syllabus and collect every term you are expected to know. Do not try to learn them yet. A list of fifty terms you can see is a better position than a chapter you have read twice.
- 2.Week one, second sitting — split the list into groups of ten to fifteen, grouped by confusability rather than by chapter. All four control-and-outcome terms in one group; all three professional titles in another.
- 3.Weeks two and three — test one group per sitting, two or three days apart, retrieving each definition before you look at it. Mark the ones you missed and put them at the front of the next sitting.
- 4.Week three — start interleaving. Mix groups together rather than running them in order, so you have to work out which construct is being asked for as well as what it means.
- 5.Week four — test the whole list twice, three or four days apart, and spend the time only on the terms that failed. Do not reread the ones you got right; they are the ones you can already produce.
The one rule that matters more than the schedule: if you can see the answer, you are not testing. Cover it, say it, then check.
Doing it in two languages at once
Learning a term in English and German together is more work per term and less work overall, because the second language gives you a second retrieval route to the same concept. It also forces the precision that monolingual study lets you skip: you cannot half-know a term in two languages.
Two things make it go wrong. Learning the pair as a translation rather than as two definitions leaves you able to convert the word and unable to define it. And assuming the pair maps cleanly is how false friends survive into an exam.
